Welcome to our conservation
30 years and counting!
Founded in 1977, Community Commons was originally located in the Barbara Fritchie home in historic downtown Frederick. With the help of Hood College’s faculty, we started a library, horticulture programs, and forums. We moved across the street in 1978, occupying a former service station. Through volunteer efforts and youth programs, the property was renovated and we continued to sponsor community programs, forums and workshops.
1978—Community Commons’ new home became a demonstration site
for solar aquaculture and hydroponics systems.
We are currently across from the Delaplaine Visual Arts Center on South Carroll Street. Our goal remains the same—to continually encourage the human element to commit to and care for the commons.
